PBA shoots down plan to let Andray Blatche play in the league as an import

The PBA Board of Governors shot down the idea of letting Gilas Pilipinas naturalized player Andray Blatche play in the league as an import for either TNT KaTropa or NLEX Road Warriors in the Commissioner’s Cup while waiting for the 2019 FIBA World Cup which takes place on August 31 to September 15.

The issue was discussed last Thursday during the welcome lunch hosted by PLDT big boss Manny V. Pangilinan for the Philippine team after their pair of crucial wins in the 6th and last window of the Asian Qualifiers which ultimately clinched a ticket in the World Cup.

PBA Board Chairman Ricky Vargas said that Blatche won’t make the height limit set by the league for the second conference.

“First, he’ll not pass the 6-foot-10 height limit”.

“Secondly, mahirap siyang gawin exception, in fairness to everybody. We are 12 teams here in the PBA, eh kanino siya maglalaro?” added the TNT KaTropa Governor.

Furthermore, Vargas said that letting Blatche play would set a bad precedent.

“While we want him to play with us and be with us, there are certain rules that we have to adhere to. Otherwise, it will really kill the PBA process”.

Instead of playing in the PBA, Vargas thinks Blatche would be better off playing in the Chinese Basketball Association.

“The coaches and the SBP will prepare a program for Blatche and, maybe, maybe the Chinese league is even better than the Filipino league where Blatche can excel.”
