PBA targets October restart of 2020 Philippine Cup

The Philippine Basketball Association is targeting October as the possible date of restart for the 2020 Philippine Cup which has been suspended since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was after the government’s move to put the National Capital Region under the less restrictive General Community Quarantine from August 19 to 31.

Teams under the San Miguel Corp. umbrella – San Miguel Beermen, Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel and Magnolia Hotshots will undergo swab tests in the company’s laboratory center while players and staff of the 9 other PBA squads will be tested at the Makaki Medical Center on August 20 and 21.

Once cleared, the 12 teams can now proceed with non-contact training by batches.

A health officer should be present in the workout sessions which will consist of 4 players and a coaching staff with medical background per batch.

Testing will be conducted every 14 days with the players following a strict closed-circuit concept of home-gym-home routine.

“Pag walang problema ang resulta ng test, they’re free to start their training. They would have the go-signal to do so but they have to follow our guidelines and protocols,” explained league commissioner Willie Marcial.

The training guidelines have been developed with the help of the Games and Amusement Board (GAB).

“Kung magtuloy-tuloy ang sitwasyon at makapag-scrimmage na ang mga teams, and then kung mapunta ang NCR sa MGCQ, pwede tayong matuloy sa October,” added Marcial.
