Phoenix Pulse wins debut game, deals Blackwater its first Comm’s Cup loss

Phoenix Pulse stopped Blackwater dead on its tracks with a 103-98 win Friday in the PBACommissioner’s Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Matthew Wright’s 22 points led a balanced attack by the Fuel Masters, but it was their defense, especially in the endgame, that prevented the Elite from completing their spirited fightback from 19 points down.

As a result, Phoenix opened up its campaign on a very bright note while dealing Blackwater its first loss in four games.

“Lahat ng gusto kong mangyari, nangyari,” said coach Louie Alas, whose Fuel Masters won the battle off the boards, 51-43, and issued more assists, 25-19.

Former Best Import awardee Rob Dozier wound up with 18 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots in his first game back, RJ Jazul added 17 points, Jason Perkins 16 points and Calvin Abueva 13 points.

Bobby Ray Parks missed his first four shots but still finished with 25 points and seven rebounds to pace Blackwater, which also drew 24 and 18 from Alex Stepheson.
