The firsts just keep on coming for Phoenix in the PBA Governors Cup.
Early in the eliminations, at least a share of the lead. Now, a high seeding in the quarterfinals and a twice-to-beat advantage that comes with it.
Calvin Abueva, Matthew Wright and Eugene Phelps led the determined Fuel Masters who beat Blackwater 97-91 Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum to grab the No. 2 ranking in the last eight.
Abueva bucked early foul trouble to finish with a game-high 25 points on top of eight rebounds and two dimes and Phelps overcame the Elite’s tough defensive stance to finish with 16 points, 19 rebounds and five assists.
Wright did his part with 23 points, none bigger than the corner jumper he made to beat the clock and give Phoenix a 95-89 lead, which proved enough of a cushion in the tightly-fought game.
After finishing the eliminations with an 8-3 slate, Phoenix actually wound up tied with Magnolia Ang Pambansang Manok and Alaska, but took the spot just behind leader Barangay Ginebra due to a higher quotient.
