Magnolia Hotshots guard Peter June Simon was already grateful for the opportunity to be part of the PBA’s annual All-Star festivities. Winning the three-point shootout title was the farthest from his mind, but fate had other things in mind.
Simon won the title by outlasting NorthPort rookie Robert Bolick and NLEX sniper Philip Paniamogan in the final round of the most-anticipated skills challenge for the day.
The 15-year veteran finished the elimination round tied for first place with Paniamogan with a score of 20. Bolick rounded up the finalists with 19.
Defending champion James Yap crashed out early as the former teammate of Simon could only come up with 12.
Gilas Pilipinas shooter Marcio Lassiter was also a disappointment as he finished with the lowest score of 7.
In the final round, Simon finished with 17 and narrowly escaped Bolick who scored 16. Paniamogan came in at 3rd with 14.
Simon, who went home P30,000 richer, admitted afterwards that he was nervous throughout the game.
“Kinakabahan talaga ako kahit sobrang tagal ko na sa PBA. Inisip ko na lang na huwag madaliin yung tira ko and make sure na pumapasok ito.”
