Rain or Shine bucked the loss of Denzel Bowles due to a knee injury and held on to pull off a crucial 86-84 win over Alaska in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, Saturday night at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
The Elasto Painters responded to the call of head coach Caloy Garcia to step up in the absence of Bowles who was taken to a nearby hospital after the 1st half after feeling something crack in his knee.
“Halftime pa lang dinala na siya sa hospital because he felt that something cracked in his knee. Most probably he’ll be out,” said Garcia.
“Sayang eh. In yesterday’s practice, it was the first time that he really talked to everybody. He’s a very silent type but you can feel him yesterday, medyo malakas yung boses niya that he feels that we’re a good team and he asked the locals to play the way they did in the All-Filipino and he’s here to help us all the way,” he added.
Bowles still topscored for the team with 16 points despite playing for only 18 minutes.
The hard-earned victory enabled the Elasto Painters to snap out of a 2-game slide and improve to 4-5 while the loss was the 4th straight for the Aces who fell to 4-6.
Javee Mocon and Mark Borborad backstopped Bowles by contributing 11 points apiece while Rey Nambatac added 10.
Chris Banchero led Alaska’s losing cause with 24 points and 9 assists while Diamon Simpson had 22 markers and 23 boards. Vic Manuel finished with 13 points in 15 minutes of play.
