Rain or Shine takes semis series opener with 84-77 whipping of Magnolia

Rain or Shine proved to be the steadier team during crunchtime as the second-seeded Elasto Painters pulled the rug from under the streaking Magnolia Hotshots, 84-77, to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven semifinal series, Friday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Beau Belga sparked a 9-0 run halfway into the final period to rip apart a close game and establish a double-digit spread, 73-63, which eventually took the fight out of the Hotshots.

Belga finished with 12 markers but it was rookie Javee Mocon who took home Best Player of the Game honors by leading the team in scoring, 15 and in rebounding with 10.

Gabe Norwood had 13 while Ed Daquioag added 10.

Game 2 of the series is slated on Sunday, also at the Big Dome.

Paul Lee led the Hotshots with 15 points but was 0 of 7 from long distance. Ian Sangalang finished with 13 but had a game-high 7 turnovers.

The Hotshots shot miserably from long distance, making only 2 out of 22 attempts for a measly 9% shooting clip.

The scores:

Rain or Shine 84 – Mocon 15, Norwood 13, Belga 12, Daquioag 10, Rosales 9, Yap 8, Nambatac 7, Borboran 6, Ponefrada 2, Torres 2, Ahanmisi 0.
