Sister teams San Miguel and Magnolia clash once more in the Finals of the Philippine Cup and this early both teams from the SMC group have assured their fans and PBA followers in general that the battle for the league’s most coveted championship is purely for pride and financial gain, and not for anything else.
Team governors Robert Non of San Miguel and Rene Pardo of Magnolia explained their take on the issue which has been a hot topic whenever teams from their stable meet in a playoff series.
“Nagbibigayan ng game? Sabihin mo yan kay Tim Cone. Masama nga ang loob nung matalo sila nung isang conference,” said Pardo during the pre-finals press conference held last Monday at Sambokojin in Libis, in reference to their former coach who now handles Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel, another sister team.
“Kanya-kanyang kontrata yan, kanya-kanya kaming bonus. So hindi magbibigayan ang mga ito,” added the amiable Magnolia executive.
Non agreed with his counterpart’s perspective.
“May mga kontrata yan, may mga bonuses yan. Kung talo ka, wala kang bonus. Kung panalo ka, may bonus ka. So hindi mangyayari yun na every finals lagi na lang ganun (bigayan),” he said.
San Miguel coach Leo Austria, however, had a lighter take on things.
“Naniniwala ako na magbibigayan ang mga ito pagdating ng laro – magbibigayan ng mga siko at tadyak,” said the 6-time PBA champion coach in jest.
Game 1 of the race-to-four championship affair is on Wednesday, May 1 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum with the Beermen eyeing an unprecedented 5th straight Philippine Cup title.
