San Miguel picked up its 3rd straight win in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, outlasting Rain or Shine, 89-87, Saturday night at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro City.
The Beermen, thus, assured itself of a spot in the quarterfinal round with an even 5-5 record while the loss snapped the Elasto Painters’s 2-game win streak and dropped the Caloy Garcia-mentored squad to 5-6, good for 7th place in the team standings.
Chris McCullough and June Mar Fajardo conspired for the Beermen’s final 11 points as the 2017 Commissioner’s Cup champs weathered off repeated rallies by the Elasto Painters to pull off the victory.
The 24-year old McCullough finished with 24 points, including a clutch triple with 1:38 remaining in the final frame to give San Miguel a more comfortable 5-point lead, 87-82, to go along with 17 boards, 4 assists, a steal and 5 blocks.
Fajardo, who was chosen as the best player of the game, came away with 23 points, 15 rebounds and 3 rejections.
Terrence Romeo, who suffered a dislocated pinky finger during the team’s previous game against Phoenix Pulse, added 13 markers.
Rookie Javee Mocon paced the Elasto Painters with 20 points while import Carl Montgomery and Rey Nambatac contributed 18 and 11 points, respectively.
