San Miguel squeaks past Magnolia in Game 7 to claim 5th straight Philippine Cup title

Add one more Philippine Cup trophy to the San Miguel dynasty.

The Beermen overpowered the Magnolia Hotshots in the payoff period of Game 7 of the championship series to successfully defend the title and extend their dominance of the all-Filipino conference to 5 straight years with a 72-71 squeaker.

June Mar Fajardo exemplified his team’s superiority by grabbing a new all-time league record 31 rebounds. The 6-foot-10 Cebuano, who was named as the Finals MVP, also came through with 17 points, 2 blocks and 2 steals in 39 minutes of action.

Alex Cabagnot capped San Miguel’s furious 4th quarter run by connecting on a tough fadeaway jumper off Paul Lee to put his team on top 72-71 with less than a minute left on the game clock.

The Hotshots had a chance to wrest the lead back but missed their next 3 possessions to settle for another runner-up finish.

Cabagnot paced the Beermen with 18 points while Arwind Santos and Fajardo had 17 each.

Ian Sangalang led the losing team with 18 points while Lee and Rafi Reavis contributed 11 markers apiece.
