San Miguel made it two in a row over TNT after completing a remarkable fightback to take Game 5, 99-94, of the best-of-seven Finals series in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Down by 16, 85-69, after Roger Pogoy drained a triple in the 10:43 mark of the final frame, the Beermen unleashed a 30-9 run anchored on Chris McCullough who scored 16 of his game-high 35 points, 8 of the team’s last 12, in the payoff period to pick up the scintillating win and give San Miguel a 3-2 edge going into the next game.
The 24-year old McCullough added 22 points, 4 assists, 3 blocks and a steal in a no-relief job and was named as the Best Player for the second consecutive game after leading the Beermen to back-to-back victories.
“Nagpapasalamat pa rin ako sa Panginoong Diyos na biniyayaan ako ng isang panalo na napakahirap ngayong gawin especially nung down kami ng 16 points. I’m happy with the players because they accepted their role,” said an ecstatic San Miguel coach Leo Austria.
Terrence Romeo came off the bench and finished with 22 markers highlighted by 4 triples while June Mar Fajardo contributed 16 points and 11 boards for the Beermen who will be gunning for their 2nd jewel of the season in Game 6 which is scheduled on Friday, August 16 also at the Big Dome.
Terrence Jones paced the KaTropa, who will be facing elimination for the first time in the conference, with 35 points, 17 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Jayson Castro had 18 markers while Troy Rosario and Roger Pogoy chipped in 16 and 12 points, respectively.
