Scottie Thompson says giving his spot to more deserving players his way of helping Gilas

Scottie Thompson begged off from the Gilas Pilipinas Men’s team which is set to compete in the upcoming FIBA World Cup in China and claimed that his decision has nothing to do with priorities.

The 25-year old out of the University of Perpetual Help explained that his main reason for declining national team duties is that he feels that he is not yet ready to play in the international stage.

“Para sa akin kasi, hindi pa. Talagang ang dami pang kelangan i-improve,” said the 6-foot-1 do-it-all guard who suited up for 5 games for the national team during the 2nd round of the Asian Qualifiers and averaged 2.8 points, 3.8 boards, and 1.8 assists.

“I think yung pinaka-best way ko na maitulong para sa bayan is to give way sa mga mas deserving maglaro, at mas ready sa international stage,” added Thompson.

The 3-time PBA champion said the emergence of young and upcoming players like CJ Perez and Robert Bolick as well as the returning Kiefer Ravena will serve as a tremendous boost to the Gilas backcourt.

“Babalik na naman si Kiefer. Then sina Bolick, sina CJ. They are good for the team para sa akin,” declared Thompson.

The 2018 PBA Most Improved Player further stressed that he needs to work on his offense first so that he’ll be better prepared if and when another opportunity to serve the country comes along.

“Siguro yung offense ko. Ipo-polish ko yung offense ko. Sana soon dumating and siyempre para mas maging confident pa ako sa sarili ko.”
