Tim Cone says Brgy. Ginebra more than just a Justin Brownlee team: “We do have a lot of weapons”

Brgy. Ginebra got the usual numbers from its prolific reinforcement Justin Brownlee during the team’s 118-106 win over Alaska in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The 31-year old American narrowly missed a triple-double as he finished with 27 points, 14 boards, 8 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks in 44 minutes of action to lead the Gin Kings to their 5th win in the conference against 4 losses, good for solo 5th place in the team standings.

While Brownlee’s numbers were impressive but not really surprising, local support which has been under fire for the past couple of games finally came through against the Aces as three others turned in 22 or more points to backstop their ever-reliable import.

New recruit Stanley Pringle produced his best game so far in a Brgy. Ginebra uniform as the 2018 PBA scoring champion fired 27 points on a remarkable 11 of 14 shooting from the field. Not to be outdone, Japeth Aguilar finished with a double-double of 22 points and 10 boards plus 2 rejections. LA Tenorio likewise contributed 22 markers spiked by a scorching 6 of 8 shooting from 3-point country.

“We do have a lot of weapons, Justin isn’t our only weapon,” said Brgy. Ginebra coach Tim Cone on the scoring outburst of his 3 locals.

“I think in time we’ll figure that out, and we’ll figure out how best to use all the weapons that we have,” added the 21-time PBA champion mentor.

With Pringle still in the middle of the adjustment process, things are bound to get scarier for the defending champs once the 32-year old Fil-Am gets fully acclimatized with the Gin Kings’ system.

“We’re still trying to explore the different ways we can use Stanley, and guys are trying to adjust to their roles. Stanley is getting more shots, getting more possessions, more touches, more minutes, and that means less minutes for some of the other guys, less touches, and it’s an adjustment for everybody,” said Cone.
