TNT overcame a 15-point 2nd quarter deficit and pounced on 8th-seeded Alaska in the payoff period to win pulling away, 104-93, in the quarterfinals of the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The top-seeded KaTropa, thus, arranged a semifinal meeting with defending champion Brgy. Ginebra in a best-of-five series which kicks off on Friday, July 26.
Terrence Jones came back strong after a so-so 19-point, 6-rebound performance in the first game by torching the Aces this time around with 37 points, 22 rebounds and 9 assists.
Down by 15 halfway into the 2nd period, TNT methodically cut the deficit until 4 straight points by Jay Washington in the payoff period finally gave the KaTropa the lead, 85-83.
It was all TNT from thereon as Jones presided over his team’s finishing kick to secure the win and avenge the 36-point beat-down the last time around.
“Sabi namin, we have to play harder than the last game, make up your mind on defense, and execute on offense. Buti na lang, it came out in the game,” said TNT head coach Ferdinand “Bong” Ravena.
Troy Rosario backstopped their prolific reinforcement by firing 20 points to go along with 7 rebounds. Jayson Castro, Don Trollano and Roger Pogoy chipped in 17, 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Simon Enciso led Alaska with 24 points while Diamon Simpson finished with 19 markers and 16 boards.
