The TNT KaTropa are now awaiting the explanation of Kelly Williams regarding his sudden decision to hang up his jersey which caught almost everybody, including team management, by surprise.
The 38-year old Fil-Am from Detroit, Michigan announced his retirement on Monday through his social media accounts.
“It’s with gladness & sadness that I announce my retirement from basketball. I could not have predicted that I’d have the kind of career I was able to experience,” wrote Williams. “Thank you Philippines for giving me solid ground to grow as both a player & a man for the last 15 years.”
Williams, who spent the last 10 seasons with the KaTropa and was part of 5 championships including three straight Philippine Cup crowns, bolted the TNT bubble at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna last September 2. Team officials, however, are giving him a chance to explain his actions.
“Kelly Williams left our training camp without any notice or explanation until now,” bared team manager Gabby Cui on Thursday. “He has not reached out to us ever since. We learned about his decision to retire via social media.”
“We are currently waiting for his notice to explain regarding his actions on going AWOL,” he added.
The 6-foot-7 high-leaping forward was recently given a contract extension until the end of the year along with guards Almond Vosotros and Samboy de Leon.
