Alex Stepheson would not let Blackwater’s unexpected run come to a screeching halt.
Stepheson had 26 points, 21 rebounds and seven blocked shots as the Elite beat the Columbian Dyip 118-110 Sunday to take solo leadership in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Bobby Ray Parks added 23 points and Alein Maliksi and Mac Belo both came off the bench to contribute 19 points apiece as Blackwater realized a third win in as many games, a surprising turnaround for a team that wound up last in the season-opening Philippine Cup.
Clearly, however, it was Stepheson who shone the most with 11 of his points and six of his rebounds coming in the decisive fourth quarter that fully bailed the Elite out of what had been a close contest.
As what he did following back-to-back overtime wins over Meralco and defending champion Barangay Ginebra, the last only last Friday, interim head coach Aris Dimaunahan deflected the credit to his players.
