Two-time PBA scoring champ CJ Perez, San Miguel Beer teammate Moala Tautuaa and incoming PBA rookies Joshua Munzon and Alvin Pasaol start chase of an Olympic ticket as they play Qatar and Slovenia on Day One Wednesday of the FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualification Tournament in Graz, Austria.
It’s a virtual do-or-die in every game, and the Pinoy quartet is determined to defy the odds with an end goal of making the medal round and going all the way to booking a journey to the Tokyo Games in July.
The Gilas side, however, faces an uphill climb right on opening day versus the Qataris and the Slovenians.
They then take a rest Thursday before playing their last two games in Pool C versus Dominican Republic and world No. 10 France on Friday.
The Perez-led Team Phl needs a Top Two finish in the group to make the knockout stage in the 20-team joust where only the Top Three earn a Tokyo trip.
“All we are praying for is a fighting chance, and just to get to Graz is a huge step for the Gilas 3×3 national team to execute its mission,” said Gilas 3×3 coach Ronnie Magsanoc.
