Former Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel guard Jayjay Helterbrand made his much-anticipated MPBL debut for the Imus Bandera, Thursday night at the Caloocan Sports Complex and his presence spelled the difference as his team pulled off a 78-75 overtime win over Caloocan in the second day of action of the 2019 MBPL Lakandula Cup.
Two years removed from the PBA, the 42-year old Fil-Am felt the love from the fans as chants of “GI-NE-BRA” reverberated across the venue.
The 2009 PBA Most Valueble Player finished the match with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals and a block in 29 minutes of action.
“I’m really out of basketball shape, but it felt good. It means I need more practice with the team and I really don’t know the system yet. I’m learning as we go, it’s fun,” said Helterbrand during an interview with FOX Sports shortly after the victory.
“This is amazing, the fans are amazing. This is the first time that we have fans not rooting for me because it’s home and away. But it’s awesome. It’s a fast-paced type of game. It’s a kind of game that I love. But I really need to get back in shape,” added the six-time PBA champion.
