Chris McCullough arrived on the scene for the San Miguel Beermen with 47 points, including 23 in the third period, as the Beermen kept their Commissioner’s Cup playoff hopes alive with a 109-105 victory over NLEX on Friday.
The 6-foot-9 McCullough teamed with Marcio Lassiter in the third period to fuel a 32-7 surge that turned a 57-56 deficit into a breakaway. Lassiter ignited the rally with three straight 3-pointers, while McCullough also caught fire with four of his own during that stretch.
McCullough replaces former Best Import Charles Rhodes. San Miguel improves to 3-5 while NLEX falls to 2-8. NLEX will play its last game of the conference against Phoenix on July 12.
It wasn’t all positive as San Miguel coach Leo Austria didn’t hide his displeasure that the Beermen nearly squandered a 29-point lead.
“Obviously we’re not happy with that win because we let them recover with the help of other people,” said Austria.
