San Miguel regained its composure just in time to survive a fierce NorthPort rally, 90-88, and advance in the semifinals of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Import Chris McCullough finished with 31 points and had 11 rebounds in the win that completed the comeback of the seventh seeded Beermen from a twice-to-beat disadvantage and eliminated the no. 2 seed Batang Pier.
McCullough’s driving lay-up gave the team the lead for good, 89-88, before his split charity with 11.2 seconds left made it a two-point San Miguel lead.
The Batang Pier still had plenty of time to go for a game-winning three-pointer, but rookie Robert Bolick failed to free himself from Arwind Santos’ defense as his last-second attempt was way off line.
“So lucky to get back to the semifinals because we’re struggling since the start of the Commissioner’s Cup. And we’re so happy to make the semifinals despite we’re at no. 7 at the end of the eliminations,” said coach Leo Austria after the game.
