Wells tallies 42 as San Miguel starts Grand Slam run with 130-119 drubbing of Phoenix Pulse

Grand slam-seeking San Miguel kicked off its 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup campaign with a rousing 130-119 win over Phoenix Pulse, Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Center.

Fresh from clinching the Commissioner’s Cup, the Beermen started their quest for the franchise’s 2nd triple crown with a lopsided win over the Fuel Masters as import Dez Wells torched the nets for 42 points in an impressive PBA debut.

The winning-est team in league history unleashed a decisive 24-2 run in the third period which turned a slim 79-75 lead into a 103-77 advantage which the Beermen never relinquished on its way to its first win in the season-ending conference.

“Finally, nagkaroon kami ng good start after winning a championship. Maybe our participation in the Terrific 12 helped us a lot. Nagkaroon kami ng bonding at nagkaroon kami ng a lot of experience. The team really wanted to win and I’m surprised they have a lot of energy inspite of a hectic schedule,” said SMB Leo Austria whose team finished 4th in the said tournament.

Alex Cabagnot, who was named as Best Player of the Game, finished with 23 points while Arwind Santos and June Mar Fajardo contributed 18 and 17 markers, respectively.

Eugene Phelps led the Fuel Masters, who dropped to 0-2, with 41 points and 20 rebounds while Matthew Wright chipped in 18 markers.
