Willie Marcial on attracting millions of viewers on social media: “Buhay pa ang PBA”

Although the PBA has been controversial in recent months, it still garnered a large number of spectators during its games.

On Tuesday, the league announced that its 2021 Philippine Cup games drew millions of viewers – not only on television, but also on social media.

“‘Pag nakita mo ‘yung mga social media views natin, we have performed very well not only on TV but also on Facebook,” said Chairman Ricky Vargas.

The amiable executive shared that the Game 7 of the semifinals between TNT and San Miguel last Sunday even reached 39 million views.

The Tropang Giga defeated the Beermen, 97-79, to advance to the PBA Finals.

“For the seventh game of the San Miguel-TNT, in Facebook alone, we had about 39 million views,” said the team governor of the MVP group’s flagship franchise.

Commissioner Willie Marcial also supported his boss’ remarks by enumerating the average TV views from TV5 and One Sports.

The NLEX-NorthPort and Alaska-Terrafirma games attracted significant attention with an audience of 1.5 million, per the league chief.

“Merong one million, NLEX-NorthPort; merong kulang-kulang one million pa rin, Alaska-Terrafirma,” Marcial said.

On the other hand, the quarterfinals received an average of two million.

Nearly three million came in the semis, including four million in the Hotshots’ series-clinching victory over Meralco in Game 6 last October 15.

“Halos lahat pinapanood na ng mga tao,” said the former statistician.

“So, buhay ang PBA,” he added.

The league expects those numbers to pull up come the best-of-seven title bout between two of the legendary squads.

“I think this Finals is going to have exceptional reach sa nakikita namin sa TV at sa Facebook,” said Vargas. “This Finals has the makings of an exciting series.”

“So, I wish all the players well. Play your best,” he added. “Your best is what will bring the PBA back to life.”

Another reason for the league’s enthusiasm is the optimism around the import-laden second conference which could begin later in November.

“The other reason why I’m happy for the PBA is already now, we are hopeful that we will have a second conference with imports,” said the concurrent President of the Philippine Olympic Committee.
