Gilas Pilipinas Men’s team head coach Yeng Guiao has added Fil-American Jordan Clarkson to the national team’s 19-member training pool that he submitted to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) on Monday.
Guiao bared that the final 12-man roster for the 2019 FIBA World Cup which is set in China on August 31 to September 15 will come from that pool.
“It’s a pool from where we will pick the final 12 once we get closer to the FIBA World Cup,” said the former Pampanga lawmaker.
Clarson’s name was included despite being ineligible to play as a local for the Philippine team.
“Nilagay na namin doon sa pool si Jordan Clarkson. We’re still hoping that a miracle happens, but at the same time it’s also a backup plan,” explained the fiery mentor.
“Knock on wood, I hope nothing happens, no harm comes to Andray (Blatche), but at least we have options on the naturalized players if anything untoward happens. But we’re hoping and praying that we all stay healthy.”
According the Guiao, the SBP is in constant communication with the camp of Clarkson while also awaiting FIBA’s decision regarding its appeal to consider the Cleveland Cavaliers guard as a local and not as a naturalized player.
“We’re still not giving up on the effort to play him as a local. But kung hindi naman, back-up siya ni Andray as naturalized,” said the concurrent NLEX Road Warriors coach.
