It was the final game of NLEX in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup and head coach Yeng Guiao stayed true to his style by saying goodbye to the league the way he always does, by getting thrown out of the game.
The fiery mentor was ejected with only 42.9 seconds left on the game clock and his team up by 5, 84-79, over the Phoenix Pulse Fuel Masters for incurring back-to-back technical fouls for using profane language.
The Road Warriors held on to win the match, 87-85, but it didn’t prevent the concurrent coach of Gilas Pilipinas from blasting the game officials.
“We survived a badly-officiated game — buti na-survive namin,” said Guiao during the post-game interview. “I don’t think the officiating was up to par to the effort that both teams put into this game. It’s just frustrating. Yung mga calls, they mean a lot to the teams, but pagdating sa mga referee parang walang kwenta. They don’t feel what we feel. There’s a problem with that.”
Despite his disappointment with the officiating, Guiao is still pleased that his team picked up the ‘W’ which he sees as something positive going into the upcoming Governors’ Cup which kicks off on September 20.
“This is just a send-off for us on a winning note. We’ll take the win however it is. We’ll start preparing for the next conference. We’ll have a short break but after that, we’ll start working on our preparations.”
