Gilas Pilipinas Men’s team head coach Yeng Guiao was impressed at how the national team’s rookies conducted themselves during the 10-day training camp in Spain which concluded with a 4-team pocket tournament.
“I am very impressed with the two rookies, CJ Perez and Robert Bolick. That they can handle that type of competition. It’s a different level, but they handled it,” said Guiao.
Bolick and Perez made quite an impression during the four tune-up matches with the NorthPort guard even leading the team in scoring against Congo (21) and Ivory Coast (19) while the Columbian forward displayed his defensive prowess as well as his ability to perform under pressure.
“A lot of people saw what Robert Bolick did because those games were broadcast, televised in Malaga. But not too many people saw what CJ did in Guadalajara against these same two teams,” Guiao said. “If they were happy with what Robert did in Malaga, they would also be happy with what CJ did in Guadalajara.”
The fiery mentor added that there will 2 more friendlies against Australian club Adelaide 36ers on the 23rd and 25th of August in Manila which will aide the coaching staff in deciding the final composition of the team which will represent the country in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup scheduled on August 31 to September 15 in China.
“We’ll see them again in the Australia series, then we will make the final decision. But as of now, we are very impressed,” said the former Pampanga congressman.
