Gilas Pilipinas Men’s team head coach Yeng Guiao remains positive on the chances of San Miguel shooter Marcio Lassiter fully recovering much earlier from an MCL sprain and playing for the national team in the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup set on August 31 to September 15 in China.
The 32-year old Lassiter will be sidelined for 6 weeks after hurting his knee during a collision with Garvo Lanete during the Beermen’s quarterfinal match against the NorthPort Batang Pier.
While the injury will most likely prevent the 4th overall pick in the 2011 PBA Rookie Draft from playing in the remainder of the playoffs of the ongoing 2019 Commissioner’s Cup, Guiao is keeping is fingers crossed that it will be a different story for the national team.
“We’re still not giving up on Marcio,” said the fiery NLEX Road Warriors mentor during Friday’s press conference of the FIBA World Cup Trophy Tour at the Lopez Building inside the Meralco compound.
“I was informed that it would take around six weeks for him to get back so we’re hoping that there’s a minor miracle that will happen, and maybe he can get back in three or four weeks. That’s going to give him enough time to be with us.”
Guiao, however, is prepared for any eventuality including Lassiter being totally ruled out for the international tournament.
“Everybody knows that we need his outside shooting, especially in the international stage so it’s a big loss. But we’ll find ways to make up for it. Matthew Wright’s there, the rest of the team is there so we’ll find ways for everyone to step up.”
