Bolts take down Hotshots in PBA Season 49 opener

Allen Durham had to shake off some early nerves in his first game back in the country, but once he found his rhythm in the second half, he showcased the hulking, dominant import that fans had come to admire.

Durham took charge after halftime, scoring 17 of his 20 points—none more crucial than his game-sealing free throws that propelled Meralco to a hard-fought 99-94 victory over Magnolia in the opening matchup of the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, August 18.

In addition to his scoring, Durham pulled down an impressive 16 rebounds, carrying the Bolts on his shoulders. With just 2.6 seconds remaining, he coolly sank two free throws, redeeming himself for earlier missed attempts and effectively shutting the door on any Magnolia comeback.

The Bolts built a commanding lead of as many as 14 points, 77-63, following a Durham three-pointer early in the final frame. Yet the Hotshots mounted a spirited rally, narrowing the gap to just two points, 96-94, in the closing moments.

After Chris Newsome split his free throws, leaving the Bolts ahead by three, Glenn Robinson III aimed for a dramatic four-point play but missed the ambitious attempt.

Durham secured the rebound, setting the stage for his game-preserving free throws.

Chris Banchero, who made history by nailing the first official four-point shot in basketball, contributed 14 points, while Newsome and Jolo Mendoza each added 13.

Robinson III lived up to the hype, leading Magnolia with 29 points and 11 rebounds, while Ian Sangalang and Paul Lee chipped in with 17 and 14 points, respectively.
