Bolts overpower import-less Hotshots in Panabo

Meralco showcased a well-rounded offensive strategy, spearheaded by Allen Durham and Chris Newsome, to overpower a Magnolia team missing its import, securing an 82-74 victory and taking solo command of Group A in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Saturday night in Panabo City.

With Magnolia’s new import, Shabazz Muhammad, unable to obtain FIBA transfer clearance for the matchup, Durham faced an all-Filipino lineup and delivered a standout performance, contributing 15 points and an impressive 15 rebounds. This victory marked Meralco’s third consecutive win, improving their overall record to 5-1.

Recognizing the need for a collective effort, Meralco’s local players ensured that the three-time Best Import awardee wouldn’t have to shoulder the burden alone. Newsome led the charge with a stellar 21 points, complemented by eight rebounds and three assists, while Bong Quinto added 16 points to the Bolts’ scoring onslaught.

Chris Banchero also played a crucial role, contributing 10 points, and rookie CJ Cansino made a significant impact with six points in the final quarter.

Despite missing key players like Allein Maliksi (bone spurs), Aaron Black (MCL), Cliff Hodge (back), Raymond Almazan (knee), and Norbert Torres (dengue), Meralco demonstrated resilience and depth in their roster.

This victory not only capped a two-game sweep of Magnolia in the double round-robin group phase but also followed their thrilling first-round encounter, where they triumphed 99-94 against the Hotshots, who had Glenn Robinson III as their original import.

The win marked the end of a two-game winning streak for Magnolia, coached by Luigi Trillo, as they fell to a 3-3 overall standing. With Muhammad sidelined on the bench, Zav Lucero and Mark Barroca stepped up for the Hotshots, scoring 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Meralco set the stage for their repeat triumph with an explosive 8-0 run to close the second quarter, establishing a 39-30 lead. They maintained their momentum, pushing the advantage to as much as 13 points at 60-47, and effectively fended off a Magnolia surge in the fourth quarter with clutch baskets and free throws from Durham, Newsome, Quinto, and Banchero.
