Brgy. Ginebra sends Greg Slaughter to NorthPort for Christian Standhardinger

Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel has agreed to trade 7-foot center Greg Slaughter to the NorthPort Batang Pier for 2017 top overall pick Christian Standhardinger.

The deal, which was approved by the PBA trade committee on Thursday, ended weeks of speculation regarding the fate of the two big men.

The 32-year old Slaughter, who went on a sabbatical just days after the Gin Kings annexed the 2019 Governors’ Cup crown at the expense of the Meralco Bolts, returned to the country late last year to attend to some personal matters and to patch things up with team management. He, however, failed to suit up during the 2020 Philippine Cup inside the PBA bubble in Clark, Pampanga which was eventually won by the crowd darlings.

Standhardinger, meanwhile, saw his spectacular run with the Batang Pier come to an end. In his first conference with the Pido Jarencio-mentored squad after coming over via trade from the San Miguel Beermen, the 6-foot-9 Fil-German displayed his true worth and emerged as the Best Player of the Conference (2019 Governors’ Cup). He powered his new team all the way to the semifinal round but fell short against eventual champion Brgy. Ginebra.

He played 10 games for NorthPort last conference and led the team in scoring and rebounding with averages of 19.9 and 12.0, respectively. He also contributed 3.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game, both second-best. The Mikee Romero-owned franchise, however, failed to advance to the playoffs and finished just one notch higher above last-placed Terrafirma.

Slaughter, on the other hand, averaged 9.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 0.9 blocks in 49 games and 26 starts in his last full season before the trade.
