Ronald Tubid returns to Terrafirma as assistant coach

Ronald Tubid is back in the PBA, not as a player but as an assistant coach for Terrafirma.

The 39-year old native of Iloilo City, who was relegated by San Miguel to the unrestricted free agent pool prior to the start of Season 45, will join Johnedel Cardel’s coaching staff together with former La Salle coach Gian Nazario. The two new recruits will come in as replacements for Art dela Cruz and Hubert delos Santos.

Only one of Cardel’s deputies, Raymond Tiongco, will return for the upcoming season as the team tries to bounce back from a horrible 1-10 showing in the 2020 Philippine Cup inside the PBA bubble in Clark, Pampanga.

Tubid will be making a return to the franchise where he was dealt to by the Beermen along with JR Reyes, Rashawn McCarthy and the team’s first round pick in the 2018 draft in exchange for the top overall pick in the 2017 draft which turned out to be Christian Standhardinger.

He saw action in 30 games and submitted averages of 6.7 points and 3.2 rebounds as the Dyip stumbled to a 6-27 win-loss record for the season.

The 16th overall pick of the 2003 draft, however, was reacquired by San Miguel in a one-on-trade for Keith Agovida on December of 2018.

The 2-time PBA Mr. Quality Minutes awardee won 2 more championships with the Beermen before he was suspended by team management for taking part in a fight during practice which also involved Arwind Santos, Kelly Nabong and then-import Dez Wells.

The incident triggered a chain of events which eventually foiled the Beermen’s Grand Slam bid.

Santos was reinstated while Nabong was sent to NorthPort in exchange for Russel Escoto.

Tubid later apologized to SMB management in the hopes of being given a chance to finish his playing career with the team but was ignored.
