Strong Group-Pilipinas def ROC Blue, 83-79 [43rd William Jones Cup | July 21, 2024]
Strong Group-Pilipinas is poised to clinch the gold in the 2024 William Jones Cup, boasting an impressive 7-0 record as they prepare to face off against the formidable Chinese Taipei-Blue in Taiwan on Sunday, July 21.
After surpassing the disappointing performance of Rain or Shine-Philippines last year, the resilient Strong Group squad, led by super import Chris McCullough and dynamic guards Jordan Heading and RJ Abarrientos, is determined to finish this tournament flawlessly.
Despite missing key players like Ange Kouame, Caelan Tiongson, Tajuan Agee, and Rhenz Abando, the Charles Tiu-coached team displayed exceptional firepower in their recent victory over Chinese Taipei-White, with McCullough leading the charge with 25 points from the free-throw line. Kiefer Ravena and Abarrientos also contributed significantly to maintaining the team’s undefeated streak.
As the showdown against Chinese Taipei approaches, Tiu confirmed that Abando and Kouame will push through their injuries, while Agee’s availability will be determined closer to game time due to his recent hospitalization for food poisoning.
“We understand the importance of this game for our country, and our players are willing to give their all despite their physical challenges,” Tiu stated. “We will monitor Agee’s condition closely to ensure his well-being while recognizing the impact of his presence on the court.”
With the goal of keeping their flawless record intact until the final buzzer, Strong Group faces a tough challenge from the local favorites, Chinese Taipei-Blue, who are also undefeated in the tournament.
The stage is set for an intense battle for the gold medal, with tip-off scheduled for 7 pm.
