Strong Group demolishes Malaysia to remain unbeaten in Jones Cup

Chris McCullough and the unstoppable Strong Group-Pilipinas continue their impressive streak in the 2024 William Jones Cup, showcasing their dominance with a commanding 89-54 victory over Malaysia on Wednesday, July 17, at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in Taiwan.

McCullough once again led the charge for the Filipinos, pouring in 16 points, while Rhenz Abando stepped up with a double-double performance of 14 points and 10 rebounds, elevating his game to new heights in the tournament.

The contributions from Tajuan Agee and Ange Kouame with 12 and 11 points, respectively, along with DJ Fenner’s 10 points, further solidified Strong Group’s offensive firepower.

Despite a scare in the third period where their lead dwindled to just one point, Strong Group rallied back with a stunning 13-1 run, finishing the quarter with a comfortable 11-point advantage.

The fourth quarter saw a spectacular display of shooting from Abarrientos, Kouame, and Ildefonso, igniting a remarkable 30-6 rally that sealed the victory with a 35-point lead for Strong Group.

Abarrientos showcased his versatility with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 12 assists, while Ildefonso added 8 points to the scoreboard, highlighting the depth of talent on the team.

On the opposing side, Malaysia was led by John Murry’s explosive 25-point performance, supported by Joseph Obasa with 13 points, who previously played for Ateneo in UAAP Season 86.

Looking ahead, Strong Group eyes to extend their winning streak as they face off against Future Sports USA on Thursday, July 18, aiming to maintain their spot at the top of the standings tied with Chinese Taipei-Blue at 4-0.

With the coveted title on the line, Strong Group is determined to continue their dominant run and emerge victorious in the single round-robin tournament.
