Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 vs Hong Kong [19th Asian Games | Sep. 27, 2023]

The Gilas Pilipinas men’s 3×3 team has started the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, with a bang.

This comes after they defeated Jordan 13-8 in their first Pool A assignment on Monday afternoon at the Deqing Geographic Information Park Basketball Court.

Bryan Sajonia gave Gilas 3×3 a 3-2 lead, and they poured it on from there, outscoring Jordan 12-6 on a John Rey Pasaol bucket with less than two minutes remaining.

Jordan could not mount a comeback after Akef Al Shiyyab narrowed the margin to five points, 13-8, with only 26 seconds remaining.

Bismarck Lina added four points to Sajonia’s six points and eight rebounds. For the Philippines, Pasaol had two points while Justine Sanchez got one point and two rebounds.

The Gilas Men’s 3×3 will return to action against Chinese-Taipei on Tuesday afternoon, followed by games against Hong Kong on Wednesday and superpower Mongolia on Friday.

The top teams from each of the four groups will progress to the quarterfinals, while the second- and third-placed teams will compete in a quarterfinal playoff.

After organizers declined their request to replace two of their players, the Gilas Pilipinas Women’s 3×3 team was forced to withdraw from its own competition.
