Arvin Tolentino scores career-best 51 as NorthPort demolishes Converge
In a comment that quickly gained traction on social media, Converge assistant coach Danny Ildefonso took a pointed jab at NorthPort, the team that selected his son, Dave, in the draft, accusing them of lacking the toughness needed to secure victories.
However, just days later, the Batang Pier proved their critics wrong, showcasing their determination and resilience.
Arvin Tolentino delivered a stunning performance, erupting for 51 points as NorthPort triumphed over Converge, 135-109, clinching their second consecutive victory in Group A of the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 29.
From the opening tip-off, Tolentino was in relentless form, never letting up throughout the game. His remarkable scoring feat marked one of the most significant single-game performances in recent PBA history, making him the first player to surpass the 50-point mark since Stanley Pringle achieved the same feat for Globalport in 2018.
The last instance of a local player scoring 51 points dates all the way back to 2004, when Asi Taulava accomplished the same milestone.
The 28-year-old wingman consistently found his rhythm, notching double-digit points in every quarter. The Batang Pier surged ahead early on, establishing a commanding 68-49 lead by halftime.
NorthPort maintained their momentum, expanding their lead to as much as 29 points, while Converge struggled to mount any significant challenge to the formidable advantage.
In addition to his historic scoring night, Tolentino contributed seven rebounds and three assists. Joshua Munzon also played a vital role, adding 19 points and anchoring the defense with five steals, elevating NorthPort’s record to 2-1.
Support came from Jio Jalalon with 13 points, Damie Cuntapay with 10, and William Navarro also chipping in with 10, compensating for the off night of import Venky Jois, who managed only six points despite securing 13 rebounds.
Scotty Hopson led Converge with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists; however, his efforts fell short as the team was unable to build on the momentum from his game-winning four-point play against TNT last time out.
Alec Stockton contributed 19 points, while Justin Arana finished with 16 points before exiting the game with an ankle injury. Schonny Winston also added 16, but their efforts were overshadowed as the FiberXers slipped to a 2-2 record.
