Chot Reyes adds Tim Cone to Gilas Pilipinas coaching staff

Chot Reyes has added Tim Cone to the coaching staff of Gilas Pilipinas.

Reyes, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) program director and concurrent national team coach, has enlisted the services of the PBA’s most successful bench tactician in preparation for the 2023 FIBA World Cup which will be co-hosted by the country along with Japan and Indonesia. The world basketball championship will feature 32 national teams and is scheduled to run from August 25 to September 10, 2023.

“He wants to help. He just wants to help. I think he will also bring great value to the coaching staff as well,” said Reyes who was just recently awarded by the PBA Press Corps as the Coach of the Year for Season 46. “Well, like I said, I’m here to form the best team possible. Not just the players but also the coaches.”

“Before we got Nacho Lezcano, Norman Black, and Tab Baldwin and that is one of our secrets during the World Cup. Now we have Tim Cone, Goldwin, Jong Uichico, and Nenad Vucinic,” he added.

At this point it is still unclear, however, what Cone’s capacity is and when he’ll come onboard.

Gilas will play in the third window of the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers set this June 30 in Auckland and July 3 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The announcement came just hours after Reyes arrived at the Hotel Novotel Manila Araneta for the PBA Press Corps awarding ceremony together with SMC sports director Alfrancis Chua and San Miguel team governor Robert Non.

Cone was at the helm of the Gilas team which captured the Gold medal in the 30th SEA Games.
