Chot Reyes to announce Gilas Final 12 on eve of FIBA World Cup opener

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes is not in a hurry to name the Final 12 for the upcoming FIBA World Cup, as the “15-strong” roster continues to prepare for the upcoming global competition.

The national team is still scheduled to play a couple of tune-up games with Reyes expected to announce the final roster on the eve of the World Cup opener on August 25 against the Dominican Republic at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

“As far as I’m concerned this is the team. This is our team. We’re 15-strong,” said Reyes during an interview with One PH’s ‘Sa Totoo Lang’.

“Right now, our team is set,” he added.

Gilas takes on fellow World Cup-bound teams Montenegro and Mexico on August 20 and 21, respectively.

Scottie Thompson, who suffered a hand injury during the Nationals’ European training camp, is doubtful to play but continues to train with the team.

“Our only injured player is Scottie Thompson, which makes him the 16th player. We have a team managers’ technical meeting from August 23 to 24 to name the Final 12,” bared Reyes.

Naturalized player Jordan Clarkson, who arrived in the country just last week and immediately joined the squad in training, is a lock for the final roster.

If Reyes retains his most recent Gilas core, he will have access to players who most recently participated in a pocket tournament in China.

Comprising the “15-strong” squad are pool members Clarkson, Kai Sotto, Dwight Ramos, Jamie Malonzo, AJ Edu, Chris Newsome, Japeth Aguilar, Kiefer & Thirdy Ravena, June Mar Fajardo, Calvin Oftana, Roger Pogoy, CJ Perez, Ray Parks Jr. and Rhenz Abando.
