Senegal def Gilas Pilipinas, 72-64 [WUS International Basketball Tournament | Aug. 4, 2023]

With only three weeks until the start of the 2023 FIBA World Cup, Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes wants to examine how his team compares to Iran’s B team and Senegal’s big players at the Heyuan WUS International Basketball Tournament in Guangdong, China.

At the time of publication, the Filipinos were facing the Iranians on Thursday night and will face the Senegalese on Friday night at the Jiangman En Ping Sports gymnasium.

“The thing we want is the experience of playing with great size. We know how tall and big Iran is and how tall and long Senegal is,” Reyes said in an interview with One Sports’ Carlo Pamintuan.

“This is going to be a great test not only for the bigs, but for the rest of the team.”

The match between Gilas and Senegal is scheduled at 8 p.m. on Friday.

Without Utah Jazz standout Jordan Clarkson and young big man Kai Sotto, Gilas Pilipinas will have to work extra hard on rebounding.

“Can we rebound against these teams? That’s the number one thing. And number two, can we find a way to not get overpowered inside and all throughout [the pocket tournament],” said Reyes.
