June Mar Fajardo doubtful for upcoming window of FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers

June Mar Fajardo may not be able to participate in the first window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers 2025 due to a partial tear on his left calf.

The 7-time PBA MVP sustained the injury during Game 4 of the recently concluded PBA Season 48 Commissioner’s Cup Finals, which saw San Miguel emerge as the champions via 4-2 romp over Magnolia.

The Beermen’s physiotherapist, Edward Bacason, revealed that Fajardo played through pain in Games 5 and 6, but still managed to contribute significantly as the league’s winningest franchise claimed its 5th Commissioner’s Cup title and 29th overall.

“June Mar has [a] partial tear on the soleus muscle [of his left calf],” said Bacason during an interview with The Manila Times.

The soleus muscle, which is located at the back of the lower leg, is mainly used for walking and standing.

According to Gilas coach Tim Cone, Fajardo’s participation is uncertain.

“He is planning to attend the trip but is doubtful to play,” said Cone.

Gilas will face Hong Kong on February 22 and then host Chinese Taipei on February 25, with Fajardo most likely to sit out both games.

Japeth Aguilar will take the spot of the injured AJ Edu, while there are currently no plans to get a replacement for the 6-foot-10 Cebuano, according to Cone.

Gilas is currently in a closed training camp at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna and will hold a public practice at the PhilSports Arena on February 19, 6:00 pm to 8:00pm.
