SBP set to start naturalization process of Bennie Boatwright
Gilas Pilipinas fans have long been vocal about their desire to see Bennie Boatwright, the former San Miguel import, don the national team colors. Their wishes have not fallen on deaf ears, as the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has taken steps to make it a reality.
The 6-foot-10 former USC Trojan, who is currently playing for the Shanxi Loongs in the Chinese Basketball Association, is on the path to naturalization to bolster the Gilas national team program.
Sources have confirmed that the process is already in motion, with the necessary steps expected to be initiated in Congress soon.
It is essential to note that Boatwright’s naturalization is not intended to replace Justin Brownlee, the designated naturalized player under Coach Tim Cone’s game plan. Instead, Boatwright will join a pool of naturalized players, providing Cone with additional options for various tournaments, especially in non-FIBA events where multiple naturalized players are permitted.
This development follows the SBP’s efforts to establish a comprehensive naturalization program for Gilas, as outlined by Panlilio and validated by Cone earlier this year.
Boatwright’s impending naturalization has been met with enthusiasm by fans who witnessed his contributions to the Beermen’s victory in the PBA Season 48 Commissioner’s Cup.
As the national team gears up for upcoming competitions, including the Olympic Qualifiers and the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers, Boatwright’s potential inclusion alongside Brownlee, Ange Kouame, Jordan Clarkson, and other eligible Fil-foreign players promises to enhance Gilas’ lineup.
With Boatwright potentially joining the fold, the future looks encouraging for Philippine basketball.
