Carl Tamayo set for PH return, eyes fresh start after Ryukyu Golden Kings exit

Carl Tamayo has decided to leave the Ryukyu Golden Kings in order to explore new opportunities that will allow for more personal development and growth.

According to his management, Virtual Playground, Tamayo expressed his desire to expand his opportunities, demonstrate his abilities, and make a meaningful impact on another team.

The former University of the Philippines UP star, who stands at 6-foot-8 and won a Japan B.League championship in his rookie year with Ryukyu, will be returning to the Philippines next week after being granted his release by the Golden Kings earlier today.

“As I bid farewell to the Ryukyu Golden Kings, I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every fan who has been with me on this incredible journey,” the Gilas Pilipinas big man said.

“Your unwavering support has meant the world for me.”

“Though my time with the team may be ending, your support will forever be etched in my heart. Thank you for making my time with the Ryukyu Golden Kings truly unforgettable,” added Tamayo, who posted pedestrian numbers of 3.9 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 0.6 assists, per 12.5 minutes in 23 games this season.

During an interview prior to his participation as an Asia-All Star, Tamayo shared insights about his time in Japan.

“Worth it naman. May mga challenges lang na dumadating sa ‘kin, which is normal naman eh,” said the former National University Bullpup.

“’Yung being a professional. ‘Yung nakikita ko ‘yung teammates ko kung paano sila gumalaw sa pang araw-araw, ‘yung work ethics nila. ‘Yun ‘yung mga bagay na natutunan ko dito na ia-apply ko sa sarili ko.”

The Talisay, Cebu native has had significant roles with the 2022 UP Fighting Maroons champion squad and with Gilas during their journey to the 2023 FIBA World Cup. He will now be equipped with these experiences as he continues to pursue his basketball career.

Tamayo had a strong performance in his final game in the B.League, scoring 18 points to help lead the Asia All-Stars to a 127-115 victory over the Rising Stars.

However, he did not participate in yesterday’s game when Ryukyu lost, 77-75, in the regular season match against Nagoya Diamond Dolphins.
