Rain or Shine slips past NLEX in OT

Adrian Nocum delivered a captivating finish after Anton Asistio’s explosive start, propelling Rain or Shine to a thrilling 123-114 overtime victory over NLEX in the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. The game took place on a charged Tuesday night, September 17, marking a significant step for Rain or Shine as they clawed back into the win column.

Asistio shone brightly with a season-high 25 points, setting a blistering pace for the Elasto Painters throughout the regulation period. His remarkable 14-point burst in the opening quarter not only set the tone but also underscored the team’s aggressive strategy.

Despite their valiant effort and a dramatic 17-3 run in the fourth quarter to wipe out a 12-point deficit, the Road Warriors forced overtime but couldn’t sustain their momentum, visibly tiring as the extra session progressed.

In the critical overtime, Nocum emerged as the hero, scoring seven of his total 11 points to decisively tilt the game in Rain or Shine’s favor and effectively secure their playoff berth.

The team also benefited from Aaron Fuller’s robust performance under the basket, as he snagged key offensive rebounds and tallied 23 points alongside 25 rebounds. Supporting efforts from Jhonard Clarito, and rookies Felix Pangilinan-Lemetti and Caelan Tiongson, who contributed 15, 14, and 11 points respectively, underscored Rain or Shine’s balanced offensive threat.

This collective effort was crucial in countering the stellar debut of NLEX’s new import, DeQuan Jones, who erupted for 49 points and 11 rebounds.

Robert Bolick, despite battling cramps, nearly achieved a triple-double for NLEX with 28 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. His efforts, however, were insufficient as NLEX stumbled to their fourth consecutive defeat, dropping to a 3-5 record.

The game reached a fever pitch when NLEX overturned a 105-93 deficit, briefly leading 110-108 after a Bolick layup. However, Rain or Shine responded to tie the game at 110 with just 19 seconds remaining. A staunch defensive stand then forced Bolick into a challenging fadeaway shot as regulation expired, setting the stage for Rain or Shine’s overtime dominance where Nocum took charge, Fuller dominated the boards, and Asistio sealed the win with three critical free throws.
