UAE expresses interest in naturalizing Kevin Quiambao

Amidst the intense competition of the 33rd Dubai International Basketball Championship, one player has been turning heads and proving that he is a force to be reckoned with.

Kevin Quiambao, the reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player, has been leading his team with an impressive average of 18.67 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game for Strong Group Athletics, securing their undefeated record.

But it’s not just his own team that has taken notice of Quiambao’s skills. With his exceptional performances, top club teams in the Middle East have set their sights on him as well.

However, there’s one offer that stands out above all – an opportunity for naturalization from none other than the host country itself: United Arab Emirates.

“Nung kinausap nila ako at sinabi nila na gusto nila ako i-naturalize, siyempre hindi ako nakasalita,” said Quiambao during an interview with Tiebreaker Times.

“Hindi ko alam yung mararamdaman ko nun. Na-amaze ako at siyempre, na-overwhelm kasi ibang usapan na ito e. Hindi lang ito about playing sa club level. National team na ang usapan dito.”

Even during Quiambao’s limited playing time against UAE in SGA’s match, he still managed to make quite an impact with his contributions of 13 points, three rebounds, and three assists – earning a remarkable plus-16 rating. His exceptional display caught the attention of UAE officials.

Initially thinking it was just a mere joke or bluff from the federation official who approached him after the game, Quiambao couldn’t believe it when they scheduled a meeting over lunch on Tuesday. But it seems this is no laughing matter as they seemed serious about their interest in him.

“I’ll listen to it. Siyempre, nakakahiya naman if di ko sila pakinggan ‘di ba?” bared Quiambao. “If maganda yung plans nila for their national team, I’ll heavily consider it.”

Unfortunately for Quiambao, there are some complications to consider before making any decisions. Having already played six games for Gilas Pilipinas, he would need clearance from Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas first if he were to transfer federations – making it a long and challenging process for this talented young player who is quickly making a name for himself on both local and international courts.
