The 2021 PBA Philippine Cup is all set to resume after the Don Honorio Ventura State University in Bacolor, Pampanga approved the league’s request to use its gym as venue for the official games.
League commissioner Willie Marcial bared the development after a lengthy meeting with university president Dr. Enrique G. Baking.
“In-endorse tayo ni (Pampanga) Governor (Dennis) Pineda. In principle, okay na tayo,” explained Marcial during an interview with ABS-CBN News.
“Hinihintay ko lang ‘yung mga pirma ng Board of Trustees within a couple of days, pero in principle, okay na tayo. Pwede na tayo mag-set up within this week,” he added.
Barring any untoward incidents, Marcial said that the league is targeting a September 1 restart.
“Kung walang problema, start na tayo September 1.”
All 12 teams are already in the province and have started practicing in three different venues – Angeles University Foundation in Angeles City, the Beverly Place in Mexico, and Colegio De Sebastian in San Fernando.
The league plans to hold triple-headers on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and double-headers on Thursdays and Saturdays.
The All-Filipino Conference was suspended on August 3 after the national government placed NCR under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) due to rising COVID-19 Delta variant cases.
Marcial, however, is not discounting the possibility of returning to the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City once the quarantine conditions in the Metro eases further.
“Siguro, tatapusin natin (sa Pampanga) ng two to three weeks. Kapag okay na okay na, balik tayo (sa Manila).”
